Kabitzin’s June 2009 List

I didn't plan this, it just happened

Oops, a little late this month, and I know I’ve been slacking on updates.  After watching some of the new series this season, I’ve decided to cut back a bit on the series I’ll be blogging.  I’ll be continuing with Valkyria Chronicles and Phantom -Requiem for the Phantom- of course, but of the new season I think I’m only picking up Canaan and Spice and Wolf II.  I had a lot of issues with Spice and Wolf’s first season, but I love the manga so much that I’ll give the show another chance.  I was planning to blog Bakemonogatari at first, but after watching the dialog-heavy first episode crammed full of Shaft-isms I realized I don’t really like blogging Shaft shows.  I’ll probably watch that show in chunks on the side instead.  I’m still undecided on Umi Monogatari, so I’ll probably wait for a few more episodes to decide.

Top Five This Month:

  1. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Izumi and new material?  Finally!  I’m really falling back in love with this series, and with the arrival of the Homunculi, it’s time for the story to really diverge from the first anime series.  I wonder if the pace will keep up, but either way I’m pretty pumped about this series.
  2. Eden of the East: Damn you and your cliffhangers!  Still, I think this show did a good job of really setting up the eventual movies, and it was a fun ride.
  3. Hatsukoi Limited: The ending wasn’t super, but overall this show was very satisfying.  I think some earlier feelings crept in to just barely edge Phantom this month.
  4. Phantom -Requiem for the Phantom-: This show has been so awesome and there’s not much of that Bee Train flavor that usually starts to grate on me after a while.  I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to Reiji being forced to pick between Cal and Ellen.  Ellen’s got some skills, but Cal’s younger and she has more upside potential.
  5. Valkyria Chronicles: Sometimes all it takes for me are some costume changes.  We are still sloooooowly crawling towards the real story, but at least there was some racist Rosie getting dry-humped repeatedly to distract viewers.

Rising:

  • Shangri-La: The story keeps getting more interesting, even if the characters don’t get any better.  I still don’t like Mikuni, but it was awesome how she asked the guards if they thought Sayoko was hot in order to crush them to death.  Mikuni is never going to get a boyfriend, though.

Falling:

  • Sengoku Basara: I think I’m going to drop this show.  It’s not terrible, but I really only liked it for the over-the-top zaniness.  Once the show stopped introducing new wacky elements, it lost me.  I don’t really care about the Sengoku period at all.
