Kabitzin’s July 2009 List

They tell me I have a lovely Barry tone

They tell me I have a lovely Barry tone

I’ve cleared up a big chunk of my backlog, and it’s been glorious.  I still have to watch the second season of Spice and Wolf, as well as Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, but I have heard good things about both series.  Has Umi Monogatari gotten any better?  The art looked nice, but it sounds like the story might be rubbish.

Top Five This Month:

  1. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood: New material, yes!  It’s incredible how far this show has gotten, and I love the fast pace.  I like where the plot is going instead of having Dante show up and be some jilted lover.  I also like the addition of Xing for that Asian fusion feel.
  2. Phantom -Requiem for the Phantom-: My anticipation over the Cal-Reiji-Ellen fallout is overwhelming to the point where I think I might be a bad person.  It’d be hilarious if it turned out that Cal’s hamburglar stew was the cause of the apartment explosion, rather than anything that Inferno did.
  3. Shangri-La: Kuniko is really vying with Louise for the pink haired girl I wanted to like, but ended up hating award, but Lord Hiruko and Karin have rescued this series with some unexpected humor.  The story is still quite interesting, although the weeds-from-hell development curbs my enthusiasm a bit.
  4. Bakemonogatari: I always thought that SHAFT was excellent at creepy scary stuff, but Bakemonogatari isn’t really all that scary.  It’s almost too bad.  Still, this show has been a lot better than I expected, and I still love those character designs.  When do we get to the basketball part, though?
  5. Canaan: I think we all need to lower our expectations for the plot, but there is still time for everything to come together.  In the meantime, the action is fantastic and the goofy yuri subtext is hilarious.

Rising:

  • Valkyria Chronicles: Jeez, how many Rosie-centric episodes have we gotten?  Still, there was some real character development this month, and Isara’s fate was very moving.  I don’t like the Alicia-Faldio-Welkin love triangle that much, since I’m pretty sure that Faldio is going to pussy out and let Welkin win (just like in the OP).  If Faldio and Welkin really started hating each other and scheming to win Alicia, that would really get me excited about this show.

Falling:

  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: You still think trolling is funny?  Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?!
