Oh my beloved chamomiles, how you make me remember love~

As much as I hate to admit it, my reaction to watching Kimi ni Todoke is nothing out of the ordinary. I bet you guys have seen it coming, “Oh she’s a shoujo fangirl, and she likes Kimi ni Todoke. So? Isn’t that what fangirls do?” But much like the series itself, which (I’m sure people could ‘objectively’ agree with this, take away those rose-colored glasses first) isn’t anything groundbreaking, I thought, well, I’m not exactly here to exceed whatever expectations or do anything groundbreaking [in blogging/fangirling over this], right?

Something need not be groundbreaking for you to appreciate it, enjoy it, and love it. And no don’t give me that “I already know what’s going to happen from the start till the end of this series” bullsh*t because you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. Search deeper, and you will find out what makes this a cut above the rest. Who would be so willing to dive in and actually get on with this quest: that is the question.

The moment you start labeling things as generic (in the negative sense of the word) and grow weary at the sight of scenes which you have “already seen a million times before”, it can only mean either (1) you’ve realized how much it sucks compared to how you’ve seen it before, now that you’ve become more knowledgeable about your taste, or (2) you’ve become numb and/or jaded that you no longer see the beauty that it once had.

In Kimi ni Todoke, we have a terribly misunderstood girl, who longs for nothing else but to break the walls-of-misunderstanding that’s keeping her from opening up to people and allow them to see her in a true light. We follow her throughout this Naritai Jibun Quest; she gains friends in the process — her support group — and somewhere along the way she realizes that her feelings of respect and admiration for the guy she looks up to is… something more. And they fall in love~ Not exactly the kind of premise that would instantly grab your attention once you hear it (except if you’re a shoujo fan of course), and yes, you’ve probably heard this story elsewhere, and you already know how it’s going to end etc etc.

But if you’d only take the time to dive in and discover this series for yourself, you’ll realize that there’s more to this than how I so uninspiredly described it. Not groundbreaking, but special; not the kind that would WOW you (I’d disagree with this because I was WOW-ed, but I’m afraid I’m biased, so…), but would thug your heartstrings nonetheless. Unless of course you’re like a certain grumpy blogger with a heart of stone (in the words of Author).

The true beauty of Kimi ni Todoke lies within, in the subtle moments which makes this series shine above others. moritheil also said something along these lines before:

“…if you’re talking about love, sometimes it’s the little things that make us realize we love someone or something.”

“Enjoy. Small. Things.”, as Ryan says.

In the end, I wasn’t able to pinpoint exactly what sets Kimi ni Todoke a cut above the rest. But rather than unsettling, I find this exciting. I’m drawn to this series far more than the rest of the Fall offerings, and up until now I’m still trying to find out exactly why. Perhaps it’s because of those special moments, or perhaps, something more. Either way, I’m just gonna have to continue watching, continue to be touched, until I find the answers. Yay for more excuses to continue watching this gem~

At one point, you’ve got to stop comparing what you’re watching with other animes (especially for purposes of proclaiming one to be better than the other) and simply appreciate it and love it for what it is, savor all its moments for what they’re worth. The same goes for love and relationships isn’t it? You can’t just benchmark and go on scrutinizing how the guy in your current relationship is better or worse than the guys from your past. It could very well be a sign that you still haven’t gotten over the past and have yet to completely let go. You might fall into the trap of using guys for rebound purposes if that’s the case, missing out on the bigger and more beautiful picture of it all.

Aaaand let’s end this post before we stray off any further from the topic. Here’s to hoping Kimi ni Todoke will be able to reach a whole lot more people

Mini-Nanoha much, eh Suou? That solves a mystery on how she was gonna carry that gun around. Pretty damn convenient, plus she can just Trace her bullets out of midair. We shall see how many people Suou will ‘befriend’.

Also, for those curious about the rifle, it’s a PTRD-41 (thanks, Hangmen). This site has a number of pictures of the real-life counterpart. BONES even got the bullets right too.

I doubt I can churn out any coherent posts for Kimi ni Todoke until I get this out so before anything else, let me just say…

Sawako-chan is so moeeeee~!! SawayaKYAA~

*ahem* Now where were we?

refreshing drink in your refreshing anime. *ba dum psh*

Sawako is one of the most refreshing shoujo protagonists I’ve seen in a long time (literally and figuratively), alongside Kyoko-sama of Skip Beat. She shares a bit of that Kyoko-ptimism, made lite-r and less exaggerated, which can either be seen as (1) not as comedic and lulzy, or (2) more realistic, down to earth, and just overall moe~~ (and can appeal to a more diverse group of audience)

issa-sa’s pretty much covered what makes Sawako awesome compared to other shoujo heroines *cough*Kotoko*cough* and why she ROCKS. I mean, where in the world of shoujo manga have you seen a girl who doesn’t let her world revolve around one guy, whose actions are driven by the noble desire to become a better person each day of her life? Not an ordinary sight, I should say.

After hearing the sentiments of eternal and Kiri, however, I feel the need to further elaborate on this refreshingness feeling, which I owe mostly to the pile of shoujo dung crap I’ve exposed myself to throughout the years. I guess I’ll deal with that in another post, and back to the topic we go.

It’s a rarity, to see a character with this balance of gentleness and strength in her, after which I didn’t want to barf at how inauthentic or unreal it seems. And if we were to argue on the realism vs. unrealism aspects of this series, I’d say the emotional realism is definitely there. As if crying as I watch each episode isn’t enough proof. Feel free to disagree if you must you apathetic orcs!

Belldandy and ota-Haruka might come to mind with the mention of “gentle but strong characters”, but these two girls strike me off as a little too idealistic, bordering on being nothing else but wish-fulfillment characters. And in the department of pathos, they fail hard, especially the latter. Yes I know, I wrote a worship-post dedicated to Haruka-chan before, also how she touched the otaku in me, but that’s mostly me filling the emotional gaps in the show, or feeling empathy despite the cheap emotional plot devices (scenes thrown simply to make you go ‘awww’, for a brief period of time, because what follows is a chock-full of pantsu). Sawako, on the other hand, touches my soul like no other, and when she gets to you, she really gets to you. Rose-colored glasses out, Sawako’s in, and she WINS. Feels like I’m comparing apples and oranges here, so uhh whatever.

In any case, I’m definitely on the same boat as Yoshida with regards to Sawako:

Gotta wonder how Sawako grew up to be that pure and innocent despite her environment. How to raise up such a child, teach me~! It’s highly possible if one has a good upbringing, I guess, growing up with a warm & loving family and community. Because otherwise, it’ll be very very difficult, especially with all the negative influences right around the corner. Either way, having managed to ROW ROW FIGHT THE JUDGMENTAL SOCIETY (while retaining one’s goodness, humility, integrity, etc.) is certainly admirable.

Edit: Looks like animewriter’s got the answer to this one.

While Onani Master Kurosawa shows us how it’s like to get trapped inside your own narrow stall of introversion — introverts gone bad — Kimi ni Todoke shows us the ideal side of things. What happens when, despite everything around you — judgmental bitches and assholes who talk about you behind [and in front of] your back and form their own perception of you based simply on unfounded rumors, not the least bit compelled to even question if the said rumors are true — you remain brave and optimistic, level-headed at all cost, able to understand where people are coming from when they treat you the way they do (both positive and negative), and continue to persist in breaking down all those walls that distances you from the rest of the people? You get the feel-good and refreshing Kimi ni Todoke (or simply Sawako) as a resullt.

Sawako is, without doubt, as bluemist says: a genuinely angelic human being. She’s such a brave & pure-hearted innocent girl, and I can’t help but cheer her in her Naritai Jibun quest. Her greatest dream is, let’s just say, a lot like OMK’s Magister (in fact she is a Magister in the making, or more like Magister is her Naritai Jibun)…

People have built walls around them to shun the very existence of Sawako, but here she is, striving to bring down those goddamn walls. Sawako just wants to open up her heart and make friends with everybody, even with freaking bitches and fags who badmouth her. Truth be told, those stupid judgmental people don’t deserve whatever Sawako’s trying to do for their sake, like “No Sawako, you shouldn’t care about these lowlifes because they don’t know how to appreciate beauty (inside and out) even if it’s right in front of them!” Pearls before swine, so to speak. But Sawako is Sawako, and she won’t stop at nothing until she’s able to reach out to just about everyone.

I’m so glad P.I.G. is working on this, viva la Production I.G.!! So happy to see a shoujo adaptation get this treatment.

ghostlightning has already given us a glimpse of that P.I.G. magic at work, and the rest, you’re gonna have to see for yourself. To see is to believe and all that jazz.

But enough talk… Kimi ni Todoke is awesome. Highly recommended. I can only hope it’ll Reach You too.

P.S. I will do everything I can to blog this regularly, or semi-regularly. I failed at Cross Game, must not fail this time around. 絶対！ *shakes fist* Will find a way to balance watching/blogging this, and studying for JLPT1, on top of work.

YARANAIKA?

After last week’s incident, Tweedledee decides to upgrade GTO’s security system. Understandable, since it was like NON-EXISTENT last week.

Meanwhile, Asukuru is about to tuck in to some DELISHIUS pumpkin pudding when Murphy’s Law happens. No seriously, it was a bloody Rube Goldberg accident.

Understandably, she flips. Idiots like her are really serious about their snacks.

So, Kufiiyu decides to sneak in the main building to steal one of those puddin’s, with Asukuru tagging along.

Everything goes well at first since she knows all the access codes to disable the sensors.

However…..

… they sure didn’t expect this. (Hell, none of us did, for fuck’s sake) YARANAIKA?

And this……

…. oh god, what is this I don’t even.

Tweedledee is soooo glad she finally gets to test her masterpiece so soon.

Back to the girls….. (oh shit can i have one of those?!!! Chibi Tweedledee doll. DELISHIOUS. MOE. MUST BUY.)

“Look! Look! I have a Tweedledee Afro!”
“..wait, Asukuru, that’s not what it’s for!”

“…. oh snap, too late!”

This is definitely not what I wanted from KG2, but still, this shit is so bad, it’s good. But who am I kidding here, KG1 was pretty contrived until it got good in the second half so I guess having Inukami-level humor is much more better. But seriously, YARANAIKA?

Yeah, it’s the body-switching OVA of lulz and Shana dere-dere.

No, seriously, look at all the shots of dere-dere Shana they put in. Granted most of them are Yuuji-Shana.

Anyways, the plot of the OVA is that Shana and Yuuji inadvertently switch bodies when he activates the Unrestricted Spell Reshuffle. Alastor quickly realizes and warns them that they should change back before anyone notices, else there will be dire consequences for the both. Unfortunately, the item is lost in all the junk they were sifting through and they decide to bring it all somewhere quiet to search through.

The first place they think of is a karaoke box, but Margery is sitting right in front of it, so they decide to head to school. Unfortunately for them, something is going on at school on that day and they keep bumping in to their friends (and ecchi situations). Shana-Yuuji is not pleased.

Yuuji-Shana… comments like “Skirts are breezy but the panties sure fit tight” are not needed.

The next obstacle comes in the form of Wilhemina, to which Yuuji-Shana fends off with…

dokyun~~!

… giving them enough time to escape.

Oh god, am I the only one who thinks that Yuuji-Shana is so much more feminine that normal Shana? This part where she fiddles with the high heels is—–

Yuuji-Shana, it’s not the time to think about a bath!!!!

Note that in the above shots, both of them haven’t changed back yet. But damn, imagine kissing your unconscious body. Oh god.

Finally back to normal…. but Shana has a bit of a surprise for Yuuji, in the form of explosive diarrhea after gorging on ice-cream non-stop.

Oh, Shana, you bully!

Alastor finally explains that Reshuffle does not have any effect on people who have walls around each other… basically meaning that both of them must’ve opened their hearts to each other enough for the effect to activate, bringing on another dere-Shana.

Overall, this was a pretty enjoyable OVA and I quite liked seeing Yuuji-Shana trying to adapt to her new body. It’s not a trap if it doesn’t have a penis right? Seeing Shana-Yuuji was refreshing too and hearing him go Urusai! x3 was pretty much hilarious. And the Mami Kawada theme songs are really nice to hear as well… can’t wait for the single to be released.

Knowing that Inuyasha would finally be finished after so many episodes and filler had really gotten me excited. It was one of the first anime that I watched, during the time of Midnight Run/early Adult Swim back in late middle school and high school. And the nostalgic satisfaction is definitely there. While some annoying fans may sully the reputation of an otherwise great show, even bringing some to think themselves too good to associate with it, I (and in subsequent posts, possibly Crusader as well) will watch, blog, and enjoy the final act of a very fun show. So join us for the nostalgia and the final battles of the War of the Shikon Jewel!

The Young Turks: Hakudoshi and Goryomaru approach Kagura to enlist her support in overthrowing their creator.

Meanwhile the old gang is up to their usual downtime antics.

It can be tough for a part-time student who commutes from the feudal era.

Though her day wasn’t all bad.

Hakudoshi convinces Kagura to aid her and Goryomaru as they attempt to overthrow Naraku with the promise of returning Kagura’s heart to her as her reward. Kagura, as in the past, is playing a dangerous game working against the holder of her heart, and he is indeed observing. As Inuyasha and Kagome return to the feudal era, the Hakudoshi faction begins to move against holders of Shikon Jewel fragments as they gather resources to fight Naraku.

Kagome’s shard is the first to be captured.

As Goryomaru attempts to take Koga’s.

But Kikiyo is ever vigilant against the spawn of her hated enemy and bails Koga out.

Kagura is dispatched to take Kohaku’s shard and corners him while he hunts a youkai. But his determination to destroy Naraku overcomes Kagura’s desire to kill him for the benefit of her unsavory allies and she destroys the crystal he had planned to use against Naraku and tells him to stay away lest he be destroyed. But Hakudoshi apparently suspected that she might not be cold hearted enough for the job and appears. Kagura attacks him and tells Kohaku to run, though her attacks have no effect. Inuyasha and his group appears, protects Kagura, but also has no effect against Hakudoshi. But finally Naraku forsakes Hakudoshi and his guardian insects leave, allowing Miroku to destroy him with his windtunnel.

Temporary allies.

His arrogance has led to a quick death.

Sorry, this show only lets you have a limited party size. Plus Kagura is much more badass as a lone wolf/free agent. I only accept her joining forces with Sesshomaru.

Overall the first episode does a great job refreshing our memories of what happened last and where the characters stand, which is important given the length of time in between Kanketsuhen and the previous seasons. Going into the second episode Kohaku goes to pray with Sango at their family’s graves and the 0060s Federal Fantasy Rearmament Program kicks into high gear. Inuyasha, Kagome, and Miroku investigate the cave of Midoriko, a priestess who fought and absorbed youkai long ago. Koga knows that an escalation of conflict is imminent and goes to his clan’s ancestral burial grounds to seek their sacred weapon, the Goraishi. And Kikiyo takes the soul of Midoriko to heal her reopened wounds from Mt. Hakurei as Inuyasha follows her soul collector back to her hideout.

Everyone finds their strength somewhere.

While others seek out material aid in the fight against Naraku.

Such respect for the sacred weapon of the ancestors.

Kagome felt a disturbance in the force when Inuyasha was so eager to guard the cave himself. It is the return of her rival, the lovely Kikiyo!

Quite the cool shot.

It was as if a million the Kagome fans screamed out in jealousy, and were regrettably not silenced.

Kohaku is also drawn to Kikiyo’s location by the shard of the Shikon Jewel in his neck, and Koga feels the disturbance while fighting against the guardian of the Goraishi. With Kohaku listening, Kikiyo describes her plan for final victory over Naraku. Since he is not quite of this world, their only chance is to let him, or even help him, complete the Shikon Jewel and inhabit it. Then, in that instant he will be vulnerable to purification. But this plan will require Kohaku’s shard and removing it will kill him.

The plan.

Allowing this one battle to be lost may win the war.

Alea iacta est.

“Inuyasha, you must be capable of setting aside your fear, setting aside your hesitation, and even your revulsion. Every natural inhibition that, during battle, can mean the difference between life and death. When you can be this for as long as you have to be, then you’re a razor. Naraku is forcing us all to become razors. Because if we don’t, we don’t survive. And then we don’t have the luxury of becoming simply human or half-youkai again. Do you understand me?”

Preparation for the escalation of conflict begins elsewhere as well. Goryomaru kills and takes the shell of Meioju as armor for himself, making him impervious to attack. And Kouga continues fighting the guardian beast of the Goraishi as it denies him the weapon. After repeatedly destroying the reforming guardian, his companions are threatened by the fire it spews just as he is about to seize the weapon. Jumping in to save them, he earns the respect of his ancestors and the Goraishi fuses with him.

Everyone decided to PUT YA GUNS ON and upgrade to new kit for the coming battle.

Kouga’s wolf clan delinquent followers worship their bancho.

This hand glows with an awesome power!

Elsewhere Kagura is floating around, trying to figure out what to do now when Naraku appears before her. He offers to return her heart to her body even though she betrayed him. Despite her skepticism he does so, but then immediately pierces her body and infects her with miasma, leaving her free but condemned to death in a short amount of time. Sesshomaru is nearby and encounters Goryomaru in his new armor. The two fight, but Sesshomaru’s attacks with Tokijin are ineffective against the heavy armor. Being held in place by Goryomaru, Sesshomaru notices a blood stained petal float by. As Goryomaru sneers at Kagura’s impending death, Sesshomaru gains RAGE STRENGTH and breaks free of his grip, delivering an azure energy attack that breaks the shell, unleashes absorbed energy, and breaks the Tokijin.

Naraku eliminating another coup member.

Yes, my liege is back in his full glory!

But nearby Kagura is gravely wounded.

Don’t you dare underestimate his might, nor taunt Kagura’s pain!

Sesshomaru touches the untouchable, breaks the unbreakable! ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER!

After Goryomaru escapes Sesshomaru quickly leaves behind his broken sword and searches for Kagura. He finds her in a field of white flowers, dying but still appreciating her new freedom. He approaches, but realizes that not even Tensaiga’s power can save her now. There ther share a brief, bittersweet moment together. She assumed Sesshomaru followed the scent of blood and miasma thinking it was Naraku, but he tells her that he knew it was her. She’s initially surprised, but smiles and tells him that she’s glad to see him one last time before she passes. As she dies Inuyasha, Kagome, Sango, and Miroku arrive, and before he departs Sesshomaru lets them know of her final smile. Her spirit now resides in the winds, finally free.

You can call it melodramatic if you want, but I thought this was a very poetic shot.

At least she was able to face her death free from Naraku.

Final Thoughts: - It’s been so long since I last watched this, it’s a great feeling of happy nostalgia to see the story and characters back again, and this time moving towards a final resolution.

- I really didn’t expect two characters to die this quickly. Especially Kagura. And she was one of my favorites too! I’ll admit that my eyes got a tiny bit watery during her death scene with Sesshomaru. Watery in a MANLY fashion, mind you.

- The OP by Do As Infinity is very nice, and paired with the opening animation I think it does a great job conveying the feeling of all the characters and past events coming back together for the final showdown. I also just like DaI a lot, heh.

- The Hakudoshi mutiny was crushed pretty quickly by Naraku, leaving only Goryomaru alive. I have to wonder if he just hasn’t been targeted by Naraku yet or it Naraku is just leaving him alive to become armor as was his original purpose.

Kobato’s cute shot of the week.

Meet this week’s wounded heart, Tadokoro Mutsumi (VA: Inoue Marina) who has a bit of a boy problem. Pretty much a simple thing to solve and Kobato successfully gets another konpeito for healing her broken heart. Admittedly it was a pretty arbitrary one, but hey, as long as KONPEITO GET, amirite?

Now… the fun part of the episode are the introduction of few popular CLAMP characters in Kobato. First up, we have Chitose Hibiya Mihara, the ever-popular kanrinin. Feels weird to hear Houko Kuwashima’s take on her though, I keep associating her with Inoue “Onee-sama” Kikuko.

And of course, her twin daughters, Chii and Freya Chiyo and Chise. Man… sure is nice to see them again, but Megumi Nakajima also sounds odd to hear lol.

Finally, even Kohaku’s appearing. Which is really fast. Considering that Kohaku only just appeared officially in the latest Kobato manga chapter. Heck, next episode even has Kohaku playing a role in it. I guess we all have to REALIZE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MEDIA, amirite? </Seitokai>

Chiwa Saito’s voicing her too, which I approve. I can’t get enough of Chiwa’s voice after Senjougahara.

Wow, in just a preview of about 3 minutes, Shana just expressed more emotions that she did throughout TWO seasons of TVA. This Shana S OVA may be pretty enjoyable.

Even dear old Alastor’s surprised at this sudden wealth of emotions.

Wilhelmina’s clearly unhappy though….

Seriously… did Shana ever manage such a happy smile in the TV series?

I am quite liking the two Mami Kawada songs being used in the OVA. They bring a really…. soothing feel.

So I watched Miracle Train and something about it has been bugging me ever since.

The whole premise (or the lack thereof) of this show basically revolves around these train station bishies whose motto in life is: Bring back one lost girl into the light each day (or week, from our POV), so quick to assume that just because a girl is down and depressed, she NEEDS help. And not just any normal help, but that from a harem of bishies to aide her in her helpless state, like some stupid damsel in distress. FYI, I don’t need your help, inasmuch as I don’t need your protection.

And let’s get real here, if I were a girl who suddenly comes across this Legendary Miracle Train, on board are no one else but 5 guys who claim to be train stations (oh brother *facepalm*), one mysterious masked man and a loli, only two thoughts that can come to mind: (1) Holy Shi– Am I gonna get RAEPED (not to mention there are no security people around, or any other people outside this ‘mob’ who can help me!)?! or (2) They’re kind souls who were sent by the heavens to help a poor girl like me, my prayers have been answered! — more likely the first one.

While yes, statistics shows that acquaintance raep is more likely than stranger raep, this is a freaking special train we’re talking about, a train that could lead you just about anywhere, nowhere. And worse, there can be no way out of this train!

Here comes another issue, though. After the problem’s solved, you’d think the guys (ok train stations, I stand corrected) will empower the girls such that they’d be able to solve their future problems by themselves and not depend on them, right? Like teaching a man how to fish for himself instead of just feeding him. Well, think again. Once they’ve solved the problem [of the week], they “bid goodbye” to the troubled lady with a “Come back if you’re feeling down *smile*”, as though they want these girls to forever use them as a crotch– I mean crutch. Shouldn’t they be saying, “We hope we won’t see you again here, woman!!1!!”?!

So yeah, WTF, NO YOU, Miracle Train. Thank you for making me feel just how weak I am because I’m a girl. See, this is exactly why only girls are accepted in the Miracle Train, not because they’re special, but because they’re weak. Ugh. Or probably to cover up the real identity of these train station guys as homotrainsexuals *gasp* The troubled lady of the week is nothing else but a mere BL cover-up?! Or wait, is any cover up even necessary for that? Anyways. Damn series is getting into my feminist nerves.

P.S. Shinjuku and Roppongo are hawt. KYAA~ Even Shinn thinks so. From what I’ve heard, looks like Hinano and Aroduc’s got the hots for Shinjuku too, eh? zOMG we’ve got competition!
